I had a meeting that afternoon and couldn't stay long to chat with Susie. It consisted of several seniors giving me a laundry list of complaints about the proposed Svensson PharmaTech development.

After assuring them the City was looking into the matter, I went back to my office and slumped in my chair. It seemed like the only time I could do any work was the evenings.

Work was also an excuse not to go home. I lived with my younger sisters Minnie and Rose, and Uncle Barry. But Hazel had said she was going over to the house to cook dinner. So I didn't feel as bad about staying late to work.

Besides, I knew Uncle Barry would comment about Hunter.

And that really was the worst thing about the situation. A few years ago, before the thing with Hunter had all gone south, I had visions of him rescuing me. I had fantasized about not living with Uncle Barry anymore, about not having to beg him for money from my inheritance that my father left him because, according to my father, girls couldn't handle money.

I was the deputy Mayor, for goodness sake—I basically did my job and Uncle Barry's job because he was too busy going on long boozy lunches and golfing and trying to hand out contracts illegally in exchange for favors to actually do the job of Mayor of Harrogate.

I rubbed my temples and looked up. It was already late. I hadn't got much work done.

As I turned back to my computer, someone knocked on the door.

"Come in."

Hunter walked into my office, closing the door behind him.

"I told you and your brothers already that I will not be signing off on the construction of the new facility in the green belt," I warned him. "Residents use that area."

"I know," Hunter said. "We're working on other solutions. I came to talk to you."

"I've already said what I had to say."

"You didn't say anything, you ruined my suit!"

"You interrupted my date!" I shot back.

"Of course I interrupted your date," Hunter growled, "you deserve better than him."

"Oh really?" I said.

"Of course," he said, moving around the large antique oak desk to stand in front of me. "You deserve a man who is going to take care of you and treat your right."

"You mean like you?" I scoffed.

"I could be that person," he said.

"You have a terrible track record."

"I know I screwed up," he said flippantly, "but you can't deny that you and I are made for each other."

Hunter was so damn cocky. He needed a taste of his own medicine

"Yeah you know you're right," I said.

"I am?" He looked at me suspiciously.

Oh yeah, I said. "We are totally meant for each other. Did you know?" I continued, "That sometimes at night when I'm feeling really horny I'll touch myself and think of you?"

"No you don't," he rasped.

I laughed. "Of course I do. I don't know if anyone told you this, Hunter, but you are incredibly good looking and you're very good in bed. The best I've ever had.
